Boarding Your Animal

For months, taking care of my pet was really, really challenging. It seemed like my animal didn't like listening to what I wanted it to do, and it was a constant struggle. As I thought about what to do, a friend of mine suggested boarding the pet to help it to learn important behavioral techniques. It was a new idea to me at the time, but I didn't have much to lose. I boarded the pet for a few weeks at a training facility, and when I got the dog back, things had dramatically improved. Read this website for advice on pet boarding.

Three Things You Should Know When Boarding a Dog

by Rosa Gomez

Boarding an animal can be a huge convenience when you require a sitter for your pet but don't have anyone who can do it for you. Pet boarders will allow you to place your dog in their facility for whatever number of days you will be gone. Most people do it as a temporary measure while they travel for business or pleasure. You can also leave the animal there during a move so you don't have to worry about it getting loose during the unloading and packing process. Before you pick a pet boarding home, there are some things you should know first.

Required Paperwork

When you check a dog in at the boarder, the facility will require certain paperwork before they can accept the dog. The paperwork may vary depending on the company, but the basic things that are needed include the following:

  • Proof of vaccinations
  • Any medication the animal is taking
  • Registration, if applicable
  • Emergency contact information

These items tell the boarders that your dog is up to date on all vaccinations, as well as providing them with the information they need to safely take care of your animal while you are gone. If you don't have your own copies of the paperwork, you can get the vaccination and medication info from your vet. The registration should be on the dog's collar in the form of a license tag.

Comfort

You want your dog to be comfortable while you are away from them. They will already be anxious without you there, so do all you can to help them through it. You can bring their bed, favorite toys, and something with your scent on it, like a t-shirt. These items will make the dog feel more at ease. Another thing that is vital is to make sure you don't leave your dog for extremely long periods of time. They can become depressed without their owner, and their health may decline.

Special Services

Some of the high-tech boarders have cameras so you can see your animal. This allows you to have greater peace of mind while you are so far away. You can check the video feed and know that your animal is okay. Other features include special emergency services for those who need it. The fees may be higher for emergency services, but they can really come in handy when you need a sitter on short notice or when it's the middle of the night.
