About Me

Boarding Your Animal

For months, taking care of my pet was really, really challenging. It seemed like my animal didn't like listening to what I wanted it to do, and it was a constant struggle. As I thought about what to do, a friend of mine suggested boarding the pet to help it to learn important behavioral techniques. It was a new idea to me at the time, but I didn't have much to lose. I boarded the pet for a few weeks at a training facility, and when I got the dog back, things had dramatically improved. Read this website for advice on pet boarding.

Dog Grooming - Nail Basics

by Rosa Gomez

Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and balance issues for your pet. Perform an inspection of your dog's nails. Then, use some grooming strategies to correct nail issues.

Nails

A dog's nails grip turf or flooring materials when running and walking. The nails help an animal maintain stability. They also allow a dog to protect themselves against prey.

A canine's nails are made of two layers. The outer layer consists of keratin protein. The inner layer is pink in color. It consists of blood vessels.

Long nails naturally curve. The extended length of nails can be painful for an animal. A dog with overgrown nails may have difficulty maintaining a normal gait. Nails that extend far below the paw pad are prone to cracking. Cracked nails leave the paws susceptible to infection.

Acclimating Your Pet

Acclimating your pet to having their nails manually handled will support successful grooming sessions.

If your pet hasn't been professionally groomed before, it is a good idea to prepare them for the type of stimulation that they will likely experience when a professional groomer is rendering services.

First, give your dog a nice, warm bath. During this time massage their body and speak softly to them. Once your pet has been towel-dried, gently inspect their nails. Do not force your dog to allow you to grasp their paws. If you are experienced with trimming your dog's nails, carefully do this only if your pet is receptive to you doing so.

The Initial Appointment

If your pet attends a daycare or boarding facility, inquire about the grooming services that are offered onsite. Many service providers offer pet owners a convenient way for grooming to be conducted.

If your pet is scheduled to be dropped off at a care center or a boarding facility, nail concerns will be addressed during the hours that your pet will be onsite. Grooming attendants provide a range of services, including nail care, shampooing, fur trimming, and fur styling.

A Salon Attendant's Objectives

Dog grooming services are offered at many daycare and boarding facilities. A full-service provider will supply separate areas for pets to play, rest, and undergo grooming sessions.

A salon attendant will clean and trim your dog's nails. They will examine the health of your pet's nails, plus use products that are designed to support healthy nail beds. An attendant will perform trimming techniques that will alleviate discomfort. Once your dog's nails are healthy, follow-up appointments will maintain the condition of the nails.
